Hey all! It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm looking forward to seeing you on the high seas. Just one thing - where are all the tactics discussions? I see a lot
of replays but...

For example, when playing the AI what type of fleet do you like to configure? Better to have more vanguards? Or one beast and a bunch of little frigates? Do you bother at all with the upgrades or go as is? How do you use an island to your advantage when the wind is against you? Why does it seem like the enemy is dealing more damage to me than I am to him?

Just some questions. Anyway hope to talk with ya soon!!

I don't play against the AI, but in MP I tend to prefer the biggest ships I can get, spend any leftover points after getting all my ships on upgrades (and depending on number of total points, I might forgo a small ship if I don't hvae enough points for a bigger one and use those points for upgrades instead)

Hey Vander, thanks for the quick reply! I think I've been too focused on balance and upgrades thinking them more important. Do you use round shot as your initial go to or try to fit different shot onto each gun deck?

I pretty much always load all guns with the same type of ammo when I'm firing (unless I've taken out someone's sails and use 1 gun to counter sail repair while the other does damage). What I start out with depends on the size of the fleets. In small battles, it can be beneficial to go for sails first, take out their mast then sit out of range of their guns and pound em to death. In big battles, it's usually better to just go for the kill with round shot.
Wow. Good point. I'm having a hard time getting the actual tactics down. Maybe I'm too much of the mind for more micro managing, as in summoner wars (previous major time sink). I need to reconsider things I think. Thanks for all your help! Hope we can talk more
Welcome Endyr!

It's difficult to say which tactics work best in a given situation, since the game hasn't been out that long, and there haven't been a large number of players up to this point.

That said, small fleets of large ships tended to do better in the beta than large fleets of small ships, though swarm tactics work well in merchant escort games.

As far as ball vs. bar, either can work, but you need to support your choice with appropriate maneuvering.

I look forward to meeting new players and seeing what they come up with!
Hey it's a pleasure to meet you! Thanks for the advice. I'm hoping the player base grows in the weeks to come. It's a highly addictive game!

I know what you mean regarding the tactics for different situations. I was just wondering what people here thought thus far. Thanks for your input in this btw!

I am finding more and more now that small, mobile fleets of large ships is working well. I do however like one large ship with upgrades hiding behind an island and a few lesser frigates to use as bait. Draw the enemy around the island as they pursue your frigates, running in a zigzag pattern to hit the bow of the enemy ships, and bring the heavy hitter (vanguard) up behind to crush the stern. Sounds good on paper... A bit harder to put into practice though!
A "mobile fleet of large ships" is something of an oxymoron... no such thing in this game Big Grin

It works well to have a combination of different ships, though, that's for sure. Small, mobile ships can punish immobilized enemy heavy-hitters or even capture them after a few volleys of grape shots: something that large ships are too slow and clumsy to manage.

Admiral Rocco just showed me how a well-timed Hold the Line + Volatile Powder + Shred Sails can immobilize an only slightly damaged Vanguard in one round and make it a ripe target for boarding from the bow and stern with a couple of cheap, fast ships Smile
good point, definitely. I will have to utilize the grape shot tactic more. i have never attempted boarding a ship!

i know what you mean about the oxymoron. what i was getting at is a smaller number of ships is easier to deal with and maneuver around than a huge cluster. 2 ships are easier to maintain than 6, basically. thats what i meant by mobile. obviously in terms of movement and distance, the smaller ships travel farther per turn, making them more "mobile". I was getting at a more group dynamic kind of thing.

Anyway...
