Howdy!

I've been playing 4X games since I first got Reach for the Stars for the Mac back in 1988.

I bought Ascendancy for iOS, but it appears to require either tiny fingers or an iPad to play. The 3d starfield is pretty but hard to select things in.

A friend pointed out Starbase Orion, but none of them had bought it since it was $8. I took the plunge, played a few games, and then made them all buy it. I've now convinced 9 friends to buy it, hopefully that helps! Smile

My first MP game is still going on, two of my friends appear to be a on a turn-a-week pace. I'm so doomed in that game anyway, 3 crystals on the 3 nearest worlds.

My second and third games were excellent, in that I thumped a different friend. Then I made the mistake of playing my brother. On about turn 40, I sent a fleet of 4 cruisers and 2 destroyers, all filled with Laser3s. His starbase2 and frigates just barely survived. I build up another, bigger fleet, it barely died, his Starbase had 13 hull left.

He sent a Mammoth ship with 2 battleship escorts against me, but lucky for me they were 100% gauss guns, so he got my starbase but my laser3 cruisers did the job.

Turns out that victory did not matter. I never got offered orbital labs, and he was just about maxed in tech, had well over 2x my population, and some huge amount more production.

Anyway, can't wait for 1.10.

One question: How much data is a turn, approximately? My brother is nervous about playing on 3G since he's on the minimum data plan.

Thanks!

It varies depending on number of players and how late in the game it is, but under v1.0.9 the match size is usually anywhere from 3kb -> 10kb ( that's once up and once down per turn, or once down per viewing out of turn).

I haven't done any definitive checking under v1.1, but since Apple removed the 4kb barrier on turn-based games we will be looking to add features previously unavailable to us due to size restrictions. I expect the range for v1.1 to be in the 8kb - 20kb range, taking into account the new compression algorithm, new massive galaxy size, and games up to 8 players (4 human and 4 AI).
