I was just thinking the other day how I wanted the colony screen to show the current population numbers next to the growth rate, and/or an indication of the number of turns till the population growth. Seeing the latter on the empire screen would be cool.

So at least one occurrence of "short 0 food" found is a red herring. In this example, there was valid starvation, a colonist was lost, and the code was returned the new food shortage taking into account that lost colonist ( so, it was a starvation by 1, but the colonist was removed resulting in a starvation of 0).

i have code fix in for that (it will say "short 1 food" now).

I will check a few more instances, see if I can find other cases.

Ok, I found an instance which looks like it matches what skins was noting ( ironically, from a 1v1 between me and skins ).

Looking to see what can be done.
