New game type idea

New game type idea
Had a thought the other day for another mission type that would be kind of a cross between the merchant escort and kill the pirate missions. Something along the lines of "Capture the Prize Galleon". Would be set up similar to the pirate mission in that there's 2 teams of players, with a third AI team consisting of the prize ship (either an unarmed merchant like the escort, or a ship armed and defended in it's own right) along with some escorts.

To win the mission, you would have to be the first person to board the prize ship. Game ends at that point (so you can't keep boarding to steal away the victory). If the prize ship dies, both (all) players lose.

Could also add a condition for the AI team that's trying to get the merchant to a destination location like the normal merchant escort and the game ends and all players lose if the merchant reaches the exit as well.

That sounds really cool. How hard is it to board?

RE: New game type idea
It would be really fun if it was a "capture the flag" type mission.

Picture 2 merchant-style end boxes on the left and right side. One player starts on one side, the other on the other.

The merchant/convey is in the middle.

Your goal is to board the merchant, and get some document (or person) and then get it back to your side safely.

You wouldn't necessarily have to have the convey merchant ship alive. The hard part (I would imagine with current coding) would be changing the target from the merchant to one of your ships. Perhaps when you board the ship, it could ask you if you want to transfer the document/person to the new ship, or keep it in the old ship (and if multiple ships, which one). And if you were adjacent without moving with two of your ships, you could transfer the person/document if you wanted?

I like both of those ideas! The team games are really fun and both of those would give an incentive to use some of the smaller/faster ships.

Also a cool variation on the idea. Gives the possibility for the other player to still take the victory even if they aren't the first one to board the prize ship. Just makes it harder for them to win after that point since now they might have to board a Vanguard or something. Or the papers (or whatever) got transfered to a bounty and you can't catch em.

Bigger cargo, could require a Rover Merchantman to move...

True enough. The one thing to keep in mind with the CTF scenario of bringing the cargo home is the max round limit. Might have to be higher than 40 turns...

Can't go wrong with capture the flag. In any game with such a mission speed tends to be an essential. In this case wind is going to be a HUGE determining factor for victory

Yah, for a CTF I might almost argue in favor of wind being static blowing north or south so it doesn't play that role. If it was just capture the ship and not take it to an exit, then wind can work the same as always.
