v1.2.4 General Feedback
This is the thread that members of the SO beta testing group should use to report bugs discovered while testing v1.2.4.

Note: This update is mainly a hotfix for recent issues reported by players. I know many of you are embattled in league game right now, and most of the issues could had slid for a while, but there are a couple new ones which are critical enough that they should be fixed.



- Bug: Smugglers was hiding fleets for 66% of the normal detection range, instead of the advertised 50%. Fixed.
- Bug: Issue with smugglers (see email). Fixed.
- Bug: Allied non-combat ships are destroying each other if they meet up unescorted by friendly military ships. Fixed.
- Bug: When you cede planets to someone else, it should clear the build queue. Fixed.
- Bug: In cases where game chat loads and players are named "null", you can read all chat (including whispers). This case is now detected and private whispers are now hidden. You will still see (null).
- Bug: Pirates are stealing upper tier tech, rendering it useless (for example, stealing RC2 but not having RC1). Fixed.
- Bug: If you are gifted a lvl 1 technology above you in the tree, it can keep you from being able to research the lvl 2 tech yourself. Fixed.

- Balance: Interspecies Medical Network now caps at a bonus of +100k colonist growth.


Changes to Ion Pulse Cannon
IPC has needed some attention for a while, now its getting it!
- Tweak: Ion Pulse Cannon range increased from 6 to 10 (for reference, gauss range is 5 and laser range is 13).
- Tweak: A while back, it was suggested that IPC take an extra turn to reload, assumably to make it weaker against frigate. This change only caused confusion to players; I have returned its reload rate back to zero (same as other beam weapons) and decreased total damage to 50% of its previous values to compensate (it is now 32/6, 48/9, 77/19).
- Tweak: Ion Pulse Cannon can now only be equipped on ship classes Battleships and larger.


Changes to Auxiliary Thrusters
Auxiliary Thrusters have needed some attention for a while, now its getting it!
- Tweak: Provides a 5% chance of evading Laser, Gauss, and Ion Pulse Cannon fire.

I like the sound of the new changes. I am really interested in the idea that you can only put IPC on a battleship or larger. The extra range is just what it needed, and the firing every turn makes sense. I like it!

I am wondering about two similar changes:

1. Only allow Proton on destroyers or larger? Maybe something like that for Plasma?

2. Perhaps Warlord Overhaul 2 and Pacifist Overhaul 2 should be restricted to destroyers and higher?

The game has been balanced in favor of frigates right now. It would make sense that a small fighter wouldn't have the space/power for PO2/WO2.

Another idea:

3. Because of the extra strain on engines/power and extra mass, maybe each PO/WO affects speed of the ship? You add four huge pods to your ship, you move/turn at a -4 penalty? Or perhaps a -1/2 per unit? It would disproportionately affect small ships (as it should). Of course, you'd have to look to see if the extra space is being used before taking that on (and maybe there should be a cost for adding the extra pods, something you select? Then you have a choice - build a fast ship that is stripped down, or build slower ships that can pack more of a punch/take more damage?

I know this is mostly a bug fix version, but thought I would throw that out there.

Also looking to set up a 2v2, as that is where a number of the current issues were uncovered. I was thinking maybe a massive ring, adv. empire, where each sides agrees to not attack (but spying is Ok) the other side, and each side agrees to stop at the half way point for development (so we can just quickly get up to IPC/techs/etc. and get enough spies and tech to test). Then maybe start attacking after turn 100 or so? No leaders, specials, monsters just to keep it clean and focused.

I like the idea of proton only on larger ships. This and IPC might make people actually build larger ships. I also like mo2 and po2 being restricted from frigates. Agree that most of the better players use almost entirely frigates. I even like the speed penalty, though, might add turn penalty to that.

I agree, could be interesting to limit certain things to bigger ships. Could even maybe make it so PO2/WO2 require cruiser or bigger and add PO3/WO3 that only work on titan/mammoth.

Another idea that I think has been expressed before:

Don't restrict weapons by size class of ship. Rather, make them take up more space. Proton/Plasma/IPC each take 2 slots. The mechanics already exist with DSJ. So you could have a frigate with an IPC, but it wouldn't be able to have 2 or 3. Or do both (restrict by size, and make the weapons bigger).

The question then would be if IPC is twice as good as 2 lasers, and for the research and price, I am not so sure. But if you need to take down a starbase and blast through a lot of structure, it could be a viable option. But perhaps the price could go down if the size increased?

All good thoughts. As I said, I'd like to keep the number of non-bug fixes down for this build; in fact, I'll revert the IPC change and the Aux Thrusters change if they hold anything up. We'll see how it goes.

- I'd like to get the bug fixes out before next half of league (Oct 1?)
- The iPhone6's hit next week, there will probably be some work that needs done there
