New, and ready to delete the game

New, and ready to delete the game
But decided to put this message here before I delete the game.

Is something wrong with my settings, my installation, my expectations?

The tutorial was fun. Every game has been frustrating and decidedly not fun.

I've played a few dozen games now and managed to win two of them, purely by luck from the random events and stars lining up just right. Certainly nothing to do with any choices I made.

The games were all on easy setting. I removed custom leaders because I have no idea what they are, turned off leaders since I couldn't afford them anyway. But most games didn't last long enough for the leaders to show up, anyway.

Last game I made two colonies, found one lost colony so I thought luck was with me. I made 3 ships just bigger than scout with laser and nukes. Getting that far was unusual, so it was looking good. Then the enemy colonized a yellow star just over[/align] 10 parsecs from me,with 8 ships escorting their colony ship. More followed as they leapfrogged all the way north to south and put another colony just outside my reach. Then they jumped in on me, destroyed my ships, and I watched as the troops came and took my colony. Just another typical frustrating attempt.

It's the same thing every game. I tried with 2 enemy and I only got 1 colony made before the two enemies had colonies on the next two neighboring star systems and my color disappeared from the map. They had a dozen ships each before I could get a second ship built, although I had built a second colony ship, now uselessly orbiting my home world.

I just want to idle away a few hours watching the galaxy grow up, just a tiny bit more difficult than the tutorial. It's supposed to be more fun than merely watching TV.

My idea of easy is it should be pretty much impossible to lose even when you do everything wrong. In my opinion I should not need to study strategy guides to learn 2 play in order to win on easy setting. That's what the other settings are for. If I'm wrong and easy means easy if you already know how to play, then I will uninstall.

Thank you for reading. I wish you guys good luck.

RE: New, and ready to delete the game
You should turn off the AI bonuses to disable AI cheating (production bonuses), and possibly play against only one opponent at a time. If there are two AIs fighting on a spiral galaxy, you can sit back and let them attack each other for a while. But if you get greedy for planets and advance in between them, expect to be ganged up on from both sides.

Once you get better at the meta, the higher difficulties aren't nearly as challenging. The AI tends to be better at high production than at playing smart, and its predictable so its easy to counter and outsmart it with the right starbase/advanced tech at the right moment. The custom builds and optimal early game play can give you an edge too. (Ultimately multiplayer is a better challenege, but you should wait on that until you've fought the AI enough to understand the game, or you'll be even more discouraged when you lose. Personally, I waited until I could beat an AI on impossible without bonuses before I tried multiplayer, which gave me a deeper understanding of the mechanics, and an edge over the other beginners.)

In tutorial mode the AI basically doesn't attack you so you shouldn't go back to that. Also, a common mistake of beginners is to not build nearly enough defensive ships before the enemy sends a massive fleet to overwhelm your starbase.

This is the biggest question right here. Bonuses on vs off makes a big difference.

It could be the AI bonuses and try to learn custom leaders If you figure them out it could help greatly

Another possibly easier option would be to set the "Race" option to "Unlimited". This will allow you to pick many more bonuses for your race - when you pick your race, use the left or right arrows until you get to the custom race, and add as many bonuses as you want that would be fun for you to use against the computer.
That should make for a nice, sit back and enjoy type of single-player game.

RE: New, and ready to delete the game
Well 4X is supposed to be a complex genre, not a typical kind of laid back game where u can find elsewhere. There needs to be some sort of effort invested into it before you can fully enjoy the game.

The most difficult game i have played is Europa Universalis 4. Well i have to play around 6-7 times just to get the BASICS of it, more sessions for better play. The satisfaction of playing this sort of game is u manage to master the mechanics. Losing can be an exciting experience, dont always expect every game to be easy for you to plow through its not gonna be fun if you can just steam roll your opponents effortlessly.

Well after a dozen games if your still losing, you probably need to utilize more mechanics & play more defensive. Well if its still too hard, maybe this genre is just not right for you.

I would suggest multi-player, introduce yourself in chat, and ask one of the other players to join you in a team game vs AI. They can show you the ropes, help you with strategy, answer dozens of questions, etc... in my opinion, the quickest way to learn.
