I'd like to try a Kamikaze frigate (late) tech upgrade or racial trait. We practically have that already when you load a frigate with gauss and combat engines, except this would be more fun. Like if the ship collided with another (or got really close) it would blow up and do a certain amount of (structural?) damage. This would force you to focus on the "kamikaze drone frigates" before they got close, and to spread out your ships.

It would also allow a player to spam kamikaze ships, and make combat engines even more i portant than they are for gauss. It also might allow a wounded ship to on the next turn at least do some damage by having the option to ram a Starbase. There's a lot of room for exploration, like whether it would be take up a weapon, a system slot, or whether larger ships could carry them, or if you would be limited to one per person, or whether they could do splash damage to multiple ships upon detonation.

Balancing would probably focus on how much damage detonation did. The damage on one detonation should be less than enough to destroy a frigate by itself, (or they could be expensive enough you only built a few.) The frigates would be more useful for assasinating important ships or starbases you could also use them to charge a pds line to break up a defense, thereby encourage the ships to stop escorting beause of splash damage.

Come to think of it, a "ram" command might be a cool option for ships equipped with explosives. That way the ship wouldn't automatically self destruct if you choose "charge close range" and there were other weapons on board.

Maybe the ship shouldnt be allowed to blow itself up when set to charge close range, unless its hp reaches 10 percent. Maybe when a ship is shot to pirces by an enemy, the explosion could damage any other ships nearby (even its own side?)

If it were a racial trait, all your ships could blow up upon being destroyed. They could do a small amount of flat damage, say equivilent to 10-15 percent of an unarmored frigate's hp, and more damage the closer a ship was to it. It would be about as useful as combat pilots or fantastic engineers, to ensure that if you lost a scout to another player early game, at least you probably destroyed theirs too (as long as you stayed close.) The racial could also do increased damage to low hp ships if you wanted to keep it relevant late game.

It's probably time for SO2 suggestions now but might there be place for a propaganda arm of your empire? Perhaps included in a technology either built on planets or starship. The idea being transmitted messages from the broadcaster increase friendly moral and decrease enemy moral (to a max and influenced by enemy prop.).
Alternatively it could be a one off effect costing credits to launch a propaganda campaign from the diplomacy screen. Spending credits to undermine enemy morale could be a viable counter attack against a spy heavy empire that has you on the ropes.
Having an impact on enemy planetary morale would effect their economy in new ways.

It would also open the way for new racial traits perhaps limiting or boosting propaganda effectiveness.

I just had a thought. If you can terraform a planet to improve it, could you pollute a planet when you leave it to keep your opponent from utilizing it?

Suppose someone was about to capture your planet. Rather than abandoning it, what if you used a scorch and burn technique of unterraforming it into a polluted wasteland? Maybe you could do this faster than terraforming, and while under a blockade.

1- Ranking ladder.

2- Old school MMO perpetual type board where anyone can join at anytime but each player only gets X turns per 24 hrs, diplomacy on. Say 10,000 systems or something crazy. Not sure what kind of hardware that would take to host such a thing.

I like the massive MMO idea a lot.

I would recommend the following ideas.

1. A option to see the planets composition, size and biome in each star system from the galatic map.
2. Some way to mine asteriod belts and ship the production to a players chosen planet, either in the same system or meighboring systems.
3. A Death Star style massive world ending wepon that can be mounted on ships larger than a battleship.
4. A combining of both the wepons and the defence on ships in to one single catagory called "systems". This would allow people to be forced to choose between offense and defense builds on all of your starbases and ships.
5. Terraforming allows you to make a planet better but what about making a planet worse? Say you want to wreak a world to deny it from your persnickity enemy?
6. A way to see if you have a warp gate and where you can instantly jump in a easily noticeable way.
7. A trait that allows you to have tremendious bonuses on radiated worlds, while being penalized for terran or gaia worlds. Basically, it is a flip on the way things are normally layed out. This would also synergize with the "world wreaking" terraforming side.
8. Improved diplomacy options via the introduction of a "United Nations" style system with the use of sanctions, restrictions and united declerations of war against a common enemy.
9. A external threat in the form on a massive invasion of unknown alien race from another galaxy. They are a ravaging mobile force that does not talk and does not require star bases to move about the map. If they are defeated players might gain extra tech that is other wise unavailable.
10. A leader that allows you to fake the signature of his fleet. This would allow you to create a mirror fleet exactly matching the fleet with the leader. This would be a potent ruse that could only be unmasked by magister X or the psy-twins.
11. The addition of fighter starships as a weapon system, fighters would be five very small, very fast, hard hitting at close range attack dogs. Fighters would be able to dodge a good percentage of incoming fire. With guass and nukes they could be a potent threat. Three levels of fighters would make this a viable expansion to the current weapons selection. Point defense systems could be tasked with taking out fighters, as well as the additon of dogfight style fights. Honestly, a swarm of fighters launched at long range could be a viable counter to medium to small sized nuke rush tactics. Also, rank one could have no shields, weak to no armor, gauss 1 and nuke 1. Rank two fighters would additionally have weak shields, gauss 2, nuke 1, shield 1, medium armor. Rank three would have strong weapons, shields and armor. Gauss 2, nuke 2, shield 2, medium armor, proton torpedo 1, increased evasion. Now, the sticker is you have to have the tech researched to use nukes, gauss, shield and evasion. If you dont have any of these techs your fighters just get a lazer 1,2,3 respective of thier rank.
12. Additonal ways to win. Eg, create great wonders. Own so many unique worlds, i am not quite sure, but we need more ways to win,

I have a whole lot more ideas, but I want to think them through before I blurt them out.

For SBO2 or a future patch please consider disabling spy tech when you start a game without spying. It is quite annoying to accidentally receive it when you have brilliant researchers, unless the objective is to balance the pure research builds by making you take useless technology!

Also, again please do something to make Bulkheads II more viable and less of a noob trap. In late game when people stop using lasers and guass its nearly useless, (its usually better to just pay the penalty to stack armor or combat engines instead!) If you have to choose between researching reinforced armor II or reinforced bulkheads II, you go armor every single time!

Maybe the idea was that guass ships would use it to stay fast when they attack other ships, but I have never seen anyone build that way. If they have any slots open they use them for combat engines first, and armor second, essentially trusting their shields which appear around the same time to protect them long enough to do serious damage! Don't get me wrong, Reinforced Bulkheads has a niche and can still be useful, but only in an rare game where two opponents have deeply researched extremely similar early weapons (laser or guass), and for incomprehensible reasons decided not to research stronger weapons that cut through structure like a hot knife through butter!

I know, but hey you saw it instantly. Besides, Discord has gone sentient and hates me, and I refuse to install an app just to login to a forum on my phone/tablet. It also frequently puts me through captcha hell and demands to know my phone number before it'll let me in, or the discord link frequently dies, and if none of the above then I can't remember my super complicated password I made, (because after all of that I couldn't trust them!)
